Bouncing

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Here’s a thot. A person left to his own thoughts for too long, would most certainly fall into some form of extremism. Any longer than too long, he would go insane. Worse, if a person reads (and most people read selectively) and is left alone to his thots, the combined potency is a recipe for disaster.
Let’s take the example of the humble roti canai. You have to toss and wallop the dough to get the right texture correct. And if you don’t, the roti canai at best will be brittle (that’s what I’m told). Same thing with ideas you get when you read. You need to toss and wallop them so you get sound ideas, not crazy ones. To do that, i reckon that we ‘bounce’ our ideas with other people. Iron sharpens iron.

Another thot, a person who attempts to be humble on his own would most certainly be proud of it. Being humbled is not an independent, solitary act. But it is almost always (if not always) brought about by circumstances. And circumstances are brought about by a sovereign God. So effectively, it is God who does the humbling on us. The state of being humble is captured better in the word HUMILITY than humbleness. It takes two for humility to work. If no one is looking, there’s no need to feel humiliated. So we cannot be humble on our own.

So these are thots, wanna ‘bounce’ with me?

Blown Away

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Just finished reading a most fantastic book. I was blown away!"The Jesus I Never Knew" by Philip Yancey. Wonder why I never picked this book up before?

Many people today, Christians and non-Christians alike, tend to look at Jesus in a ‘dignified’ manner. A tamed Jesus. He was a very real person as much as he was sinless. This book attempts to put things into perspective. I think that many times we read the Bible (in this case, the Gospels) through the foggy lens of ‘religiousity’ as we know it today.

Well, the cure, or a part of it i guess, would be to read the Bible without our own preconceived ideas about who God should be or who Jesus should be. Quoting David Pawson, "Jesus is not your cute-cuddly thing".

"I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between Him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for Him." - Napoleon Bonaparte
